Skincare Explained: What You
Need To Know About Serums,
Moisturizers And Softeners

Confused about these skincare staples? We explain what they are, why to use them and when

Story By Sophie Goddard

We know that skincare can be confusing, and it can often be a challenge to understand what works for you and how to use it. Thankfully, everyone – no matter their skin tone, type or age – will benefit from using a softener, serum and moisturizer. Here’s what you need to know...

  • Softener
  • Softener

Known as the secret to Japanese skin, a softener is all about deep hydration and nourishment to balance and brighten your complexion. It’s an intensive moisturizer to kick-start the hydration stage of your skincare routine right after cleansing, which anyone – of all ages and skin types – can benefit from. To apply, simply saturate a cotton pad before gently swiping over your face. The result is skin that is fully balanced and prepped, without feeling dry or tight.

  • Serum
  • Serum

The main advantage of a serum is that it contains more concentrated ingredients than, say, a moisturizer. The serum you use should depend on your skin concerns, whether that’s pigmentation, fine lines or firming; to find the right one for you, try SHISEIDO’s Virtual Skincare Consultation. Apply two pumps of serum after softening in upwards, lifting strokes. Don’t forget your neck and décolleté.

  • Moisturizer

A good moisturizer helps retain the hydration that your softener and serum has already delivered. Gel formulas are a good option for oily skin or hot, humid environments, while richer creams work well for drier or mature skin types, or in cooler environments. You only need a small amount (if you’re applying a lot or having to regularly re-apply, it’s time to change moisturizer). Skin should look – and feel – soft, supple and nourished.
